What is an affiliate program?

An affiliate is a partner. You become a partner with the company you would like to affiliate with. You advertise for the company and the company compensates you for leads/sales that you send to them. It's really that easy! Some affiliate programs offer 2-tier (or more) programs. These affiliates will pay you for sending them more affiliates. Sometimes you get paid per affiliate, sometimes you get a percentage of your sub-affiliate sales. It all depends on the program structure. Although it sounds like the "pyramid scheme" it's really not a scheme at all. A sub-affiliate does not earn less because they are a sub-affiliate, the sponsor affiliate just gets an extra "kickback" for referring them.

For example, let's say the affiliate program pays $100 per sale and $20 to the sponsor affiliate. If a Sponsor Affiliate makes a sale they earn $100. If you are a sponsor affiliate and your sub-affiliate makes a sale, your sub-affiliate still earns $100 and you earn $20 for that sale. Your sub-affiliate doesn't make any less, you just make more. Some programs will even go to 3-tiers, offering the sponsor affiliate to have up to two levels of sub-affiliates. The earnings might look something like this:

Why Do Companies Pay Affiliates?

Companies pay you, as an affiliate, to have advertising space on your site. It's like paying for a billboard or a page in a magazine. Companies need affiliates to help them advertise which is why many will pay for bringing them affiliates as well as advertising their product or service.

Which Affiliates Should You Choose?

First, I would recommend that you choose companies that you use. Companies which you are proud to be affiliated. The best form of advertisement is "word of mouth". If you have had a great experience with a certain company, you probably advertise for the already by telling others how you use that product/service and how great it is! Those are the products/services that will be easy for you to sell. You use it, you love it, why wouldn't someone else?
